Galway County Council has welcomed the allocation of €16,733,690 under the Community Sport Facilities Fund to sports clubs and community organisations across the City and County.

The announcement by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media features an allocation of €178,564 to Galway County Council for the development of the East Galway Eco Park in Kilconnell.

Some of the other 185 projects funded in County Galway include the refurbishment and upgrade of Clonbur Community Centre (€157,801), the installation by Kilkerrin Community Development Centre of a 60x40m multiuse games area (€161,845) the development of an artificial pitch and lighting plan for Tuam Celtic F.C. (€191,022), and the completion of a regional sports facility by Moanbaun Sports and Development Project Co Ltd (€343,500).

Councillor Albert Dolan, Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway said, “This is a very significant announcement for County Galway. The Community Sport Facilities Fund plays a major role in the development of sport in this county by allocating funding towards the provision of sports facilities and, in doing so, assisting the fantastic efforts of both the volunteers who are the backbone of sport and also the many thousands who play sport, at whatever level.”

Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council added, “I welcome the Government’s continued commitment to the development of sporting facilities, which are important centres of activity for communities across County Galway. The Fund features a strong emphasis on projects that increase active participation in sport, while also providing valuable financial assistance to organisations that are undertaking various developments and improvement works.”

The full list of Galway recipients of funding is available from www.gov.ie/en/publications.
